- RED and TCP: Most of current Internet traffic is short-lived
web page downloads. If routers employ RED and drop packet randomly, they
are equally likely to drop packets from these short-lived flows and other
long-lived flows. What happens if a packet is dropped during the initial
stages of a TCP flow establishment? Can you suggest any schemes to improve
the performance of these short-lived flows? (2.5)
- Multicast and TCP: We know that the traditional TCP protocol
was designed for unicast communication. Design a new version of TCP protocol
which can support multicast communication (2.5)

- Traffic Policing: In the
token-bucket mechanism, input traffic will be waiting in a buffer if no
token is available. Please discuss the impact of the buffer length on the
traffic. (2.5)
- QoS in Routers/Switches: Please do a
survey on QoS-supporting features of Cisco and
Juniper’s routers/switches, and conduct a comparison. (2.5)
