The course project is meant as an opportunity for students to study mobile handset systems and applications in light of security vulnerabilities. The project has two options:
Conduct a survey of an information security topic of your choice; or
Build an application for a real-world mobile handset that relates to this topic.
Projects are to be conducted in teams of 3–5 students; there should be 10–12 teams in total. Each team is responsible for writing a report and presenting project results. All students in the same team will receive the same scores.
For option (1), students’ topics must encompass both information security and mobile handsets. For examples, students may investigate mobile handset malware; mobile handset ‘‘jailbreaking,’’ legality, and defenses; and so forth. Such topics are to be investigated for educational purposes and only for such purposes. Students are expected to behave in an ethical manner and abide by all applicable laws, regulations, and legal agreements.
For option (2), students may use Windows Phone 7 (WP7) phones for application development. Microsoft Research has provided four WP7 phones (Samsung Focus) to this class for development. Each team will receive a phone based on its proposed application’s quality and relevance to the course material. If more than four teams opt to develop applications, some teams will need to use their own mobile phones for development.
If students develop Windows Phone 7 applications, they should follow Microsoft's instructions. Developed applications may be sold on the Windows Phone Marketplace.
Each team needs to select option (1) or (2) and a topic and have the topic approved by the instructor and the grader before project work begins. Each team needs to submit TWO topics to the instructor (xuan@cse.ohio-state.edu) and CC to the grader (champion@cse.ohio-state.edu). The proposal should include the selected option, team member information such as names and majors, and applications to be developed (if applicable). The proposal will be due by 11:59 A.M. on January 24, 2011.
Each team will have 20 minutes to present its work in the class at the end of this quarter. The slides should be given to the instructor and CCed to the grader at least THREE days ahead of the presentation.
Each team must submit a report in either MS Word or PDF format. The report should be at least 5 single-spaced, two-column pages in 10 point type on 8.5’’ x 11’’ paper. See style files for details. The report will be due by 11:59 A.M. on March 14, 2011. The report should be emailed to the instructor and the grader (champion@cse.ohio-state.edu) in MS Word or PDF formats by then (Subject: CSE551: group id, filename: 551_2011_group_id_rep.pdf).
