Curriculum Committee ("CC") Minutes for 27 March 1996 ______________________________________________________________________________ Attending: Arora, Fujimura, Long, Mamrak, Ogden, Supowit, Weide, Yeack * Discussion of proposed changes to CIS 201 CC voted to recommend to the faculty some slight changes in CIS 201 to meet two objectives: replace CIS 211 for non-CIS majors who need an introductory programming course, and serve as a prerequisite to the proposed new CIS 221. (The faculty already voted to withdraw CIS 211 sometime next year, once CIS 200 is in place but no sooner than Wi 1997. CC will be back to the faculty early this quarter for further discussion and a vote on the proposed CIS 221 changes that were tabled last quarter.) * Discussion of placement exams for CIS introductory courses Kikuo will be looking into creating EM credit exams for CIS 200 and CIS 201. He also will examine the current Advanced Placement test in CS to determine what score will be appropriate to place directly into the proposed new CIS 221. We hope to have an EM credit exam for CIS 200 by this summer, and one for CIS 201 sometime later. The former has been requested by the College of Business, while the latter is something we don't anticipate needing until the proposed CIS 221 changes are in effect. Perhaps in the future we also will need to consider an EM credit exam for CIS 101. Tim has created a draft CIS placement exam which is being tried out on current CIS 221 students. We should have some feedback on this within a couple weeks. The idea is that this test can be given to incoming freshmen who plan to take CIS courses, much like the Math placement exam. This will be useful for students who have had some previous programming but have not taken the AP exam in CS. By piloting the exam on current CIS 221 students, we hope to be able to calibrate the threshhold for placement into CIS 221. ______________________________________________________________________________ Next meeting: 3 April 1996, 3:30 PM, in DL 298. Respectfully submitted, Bruce W. Weide, CC Chair
