Curriculum Committee ("CC") Minutes for 28 February 1996 ______________________________________________________________________________ Attending: Fujimura, Goyal, Mamrak, Michaylov, Ogden, Supowit, Weide, Yeack * Report on CIS 200 conversion plan Bill reported that he has talked with the College of Business folks and that we might want to change the exclusion clauses of 100, 101, and proposed 200 as follows: CIS 100: Not open to students with credit for CIS 101 or CIS 200. CIS 101: Not open to students with credit for CIS 100 or CIS 200. CIS 200: Not open to students with credit for CIS 101. This would mean that a student taking CIS 100 WOULD be allowed to take CIS 200. This seems reasonable based on content -- the overlap of 100 and 101 is substantial, and the overlap of 101 and 200 is substantial, but the overlap of 100 and 200 is not as substantial. It also would help Business -- and us -- to deal with transfer students and students who end up in Business (where CIS 200 will be required) only after having taken CIS 100. CC recommended that we make these changes. Although a faculty vote is required, we plan to conduct the vote electronically since this seems not to be a controversial issue (we hope). * Discussion of possible changes to teaching load algorithm CC discussed two propositions related to the teaching load algorithm, where CC is responsible for incremental adjustments to teaching credits for courses of more than 3 student credit hours, especially courses that are 4 or 5 student credit hours because of a significant lab component. After discussion of objectives (essentially neutral outcome with respect to total number of courses taught by faculty, minimizing "creep" that gradually whittles away at the total number of courses taught by faculty, fairness, etc.), CC agreed: - to recommend that CIS 560 be allocated 1.5 teaching credits, up from the current 1.33; - to consider more comprehensive changes next quarter that might better meet the objectives above; - not to consider any changes to the teaching loads algorithm except those having to do with credit for teaching itself (the other areas being a general faculty issue, not under the purview of CC). As above, we plan to conduct the vote on the minor change to 560 teaching credit by e-mail unless there is some objection. ______________________________________________________________________________ Next meeting: 6 March 1996, 3:30 PM, in DL 698. Respectfully submitted, Bruce W. Weide, CC Chair
