Curriculum Committee ("CC") Minutes for 31 January 1996 ______________________________________________________________________________ Attending: Fleming, Fujimura, Goyal, Mamrak, Michaylov, Quinlan, Supowit, Weide, Yeack * Discussion of proposed CIS 200 (CIS 211 replacement) CC voted to recommend the proposed new CIS 200 to the faculty at the next faculty meeting, along with the withdrawal of CIS 211, effective Winter 1997. Bruce will work with Doug Kerr to make sure the official course change request paperwork is completed with respect to the questions about changes in teaching aid support and necessary budget adjustments. CC discussed several issues regarding the CIS 200 proposal: - A proposed phase-in schedule is as follows. This is compatible with Stu's scheduling plans. Sp 96 200 pilot (294J, 1 section) + old 211 Su 96 200 pilot (294J, 2 sections) + old 211 Au 96 200 pilot (294J, 2 sections) + old 211 Wi 97 new 200 (all sections); no more 211 - The proposed changes will have some implications for the number of sections of 201 that will need to be scheduled. Currently about 20% of the students in CIS 211 are expected to take CIS 201, and the remainder are expected to take 200 (as required by College of Business). This will call for flexibility in terms of scheduling decisions, for next year especially, while we are assessing the demand fluctuations. - The proposed changes will have some IICF implications. Students in 200 will use SoftPC or WABI running on HP servers, with the current Sun Classics in Hagerty and Baker acting as X-terminals. (At least this is the current plan. Alternatives that were less desirable for various reasons known to the Computer Committee were MS Windows servers, and 75-150 new MS Windows-NT machines. The lengthy pilot schedule running through Au 1996 allows for acquisition of new equipment and software to implement the facilities plan for CIS 200.) - We need to communicate the proposed schedule and changes to prospective 200/201/211 students, AND to 221/222/321 students, soon. Bruce will work with Cheryl and Elley to put together an information sheet to be distributed to appropriate advisors, etc., once this proposal and the 221/222 proposal recommended last week are approved by the faculty. * Discussion of proposed changes to EG 167 (just received) A note from Engineering Graphics requests concurrence for replacing EG 167 with EG 167.01 and EG 167.02. The former would be identical to the existing EG 167 (which includes introductory programming in Fortran for most engineering students), and EG 167.02 would be similar but would teach C and C++ as the language. After some discussion, CC concluded that we are not sure this is from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Geodetic Science, or from a subset of their faculty who still refer to themselves as "Engineering Graphics". CC also had many questions about the rationale and the proposed syllabus. Rohit agreed to try to get more information from CEEGS, and to try to talk with some students who are taking EG 167 this quarter. Bruce has already determined that EE (Computer Engineering option) will require CIS 221, 222, ... when it goes into effect in Au 1996. However, apparently EE wants their other students to learn C++, which is the rationale listed for EG 167.02. The role of CIS 230 in meeting this need is an important question. Cheryl reported hearing of demand for CIS 230 in excess of our current scheduled offerings, suggesting that further study of this situation is in order. Concurrence for EG 167 changes is requested by Feb 6, which is very short notice. Given the limited time to answer questions, we plan to respond by asking for more time to decide whether concurrence is appropriate. This issue will also be discussed at the next faculty meeting when CC is on the agenda (probably Mon Feb 5). ______________________________________________________________________________ Next meeting: 14 February 1996, 3:30 PM, in DL 698. Respectfully submitted, Bruce W. Weide, CC Chair
