Curriculum Committee ("CC") Minutes for 21 November 1995 ______________________________________________________________________________ Attending: Arora, Fleming, Fujimura, Goyal, Kerr, Mamrak, Michaylov, Ogden, Quinlan, Raghavan, Weide, Woodruff * Discussion of proposed changes to CIS 211 (piloted as CIS 294J) Elley, Chris, Srini, and Doug presented information about the content of 294J: "Computer-Assisted Problem Solving for Business", which is the proposed replacement for CIS 211 to meet the needs of our customers in the College of Business. CC made several recommendations: - Assign (temporarily at least) the number 200 to the proposed course, for discussion purposes. With MATH 130 as a prerequisite (see below) this number seems reasonable. Since the proposed course is so different from CIS 211, CC felt it was inappropriate simply to consider this a "change" to 211. - Check to see what computer use is required in UVC 100, ENGL 110, and any other courses that might be made prerequisites without getting objections from the College of Business. Although CC recognized that even students who have used computers before might have some psychological barriers to overcome, it seems inappropriate to have things like word processing and e-mail as explicit topics in more than one required course. - Consider how the course content and assignments would change with MATH 130 as a prerequisite in place of currently listed MATH 075 (which also is the prerequisite for CIS 101). CC agreed that we should seek College of Business concurrence that MATH 130 is an appropriate prerequisite for this course. - Rewrite the course objectives to be more specific about the depth of coverage of the various areas and tools (spreadsheets, databases, etc.). These could be written in terms of "mastery", "familiarity", and "exposure" as defined in the unofficial Curriculum Committee home page (http://www.cis.ohio-state.edu/~weide/curriculum-committee). - Continue CIS 100 and CIS 101 as-is for now, with the intent that CC will consider what to do with those courses separately during Winter quarter. The College of Business is a big enough customer that we should try to fix 211 to solve their problems first. Over the longer term, however, we probably should plan to let 100 die out on its own (with perhaps a little help in the form of jawboning with counselors, closing out 100 rather than 101 sections, etc.). This would leave CIS 101 for students seeking a GEC course, and CIS 200 for College of Business students and others with slightly better math background than just MATH 075. Elley agreed to follow up on these suggestions with the CIS 294J instructors and to come back in early Winter with a revised proposal. Bruce agreed to work with her on the paperwork (official proposed syllabus, etc.) to present to the CC then. ______________________________________________________________________________ Next meeting: Tuesday November 28, 12:30-1:30 in DL 698. Respectfully submitted, Bruce W. Weide, CC Chair
