Curriculum Committee ("CC") Minutes for 10 October 1995 ______________________________________________________________________________ Attending: Fleming, Fujimura, Mamrak, Michaylov, Weide, Yeack * Discussion of issues involved in setting up a permanent course on ethics/professionalism to meet accreditation requirements We discussed Ken's proposal for a permanent 1 credit hour course tentatively called "Social and Ethical Issues in Computing". This course is needed for accreditation of the CSE program. Issues raised included: - Which of our undergraduate programs will require it? - The proposed course is a discussion course with 20% of the grade based on classroom participation. Is an enrollment limit of 25 appropriate? Is this too big for the instructor to get to know all the students, meeting only 1 hour a week, and for students to get a chance to participate? Or is this too small to be economical; in practice, what's the difference between 25 and 40 students in what is nominally a "discussion"? - Is the course appropriate for graduate credit? Should it have a 600 number then? How about 590 or 690? CC will consider these questions off-line during the coming week and hopes to vote on a recommendation at the beginning of next week's meeting. * Adjustment of individual assignments Some assignments posted earlier for CC members were adjusted. Sandy will be the CC person responsible for the 101/211 changes; she will not be responsible for leading discussion of teaching loads as reported last week. Bruce will now be responsible for general clean-up of course descriptions. Regarding teaching load credits, CC agreed to request that Stu set up an ad hoc loads committee ASAP. It seems likely that the question of teaching load credits for courses with more than 3 student credit hours will be only one part of the equation. We might also need to respond to PhD program review questions about other adjustments to the teaching load computations; this seems clearly outside the realm of the Curriculum Committee. ______________________________________________________________________________ Next meeting: Tuesday October 17, 12:30-1:30 in DL 698. Respectfully submitted, Bruce W. Weide, CC Chair
