Curriculum Committee ("CC") Minutes for 3 October 1995 ______________________________________________________________________________ Attending: Arora, Fleming, Fujimura, Goyal, Ogden, Weide, Yeack * Discussion of additions to annual agenda - Changing teaching load credit for CIS 360 from 1.00 to 1.33? The Curriculum Committee responsibilities include review of teaching load credits for courses. This question, however, raises two more general issues: (1) Given that a few courses now have teaching load credit of 1.33 (321, 516, 560, 758), should we simply go back to teaching load credits equal to course credit hours? (2) Should we re-examine course credit hours for all CIS courses? In her absence, CC agreed that Sandy should be the CC person to lead discussion of these issues at a future meeting. This is a medium-priority item on the CC agenda for this year, with the minimum objective of settling the teaching load question for 360 soon. (Also in question: 657.02, which is 4 credit hours.) CC also agreed that the general question of teaching load computation -- which might come up again as a result of comments arising from the PhD program review -- should NOT be a CC issue, since it involves all manner of things unrelated to curriculum. - Making CIS 694E (Introduction to High Performance Computing) into a permanent course? Saday wanted this item added as a medium priority, and will provide answers to the new course questionnaire and a proposed syllabus in order to get on the agenda. Kikuo volunteered to be the CC liaison for this topic. - Looking for opportunities to offer upper division/graduate service courses on various aspects of computing to students from other departments? The 694E item raises the question whether we have other opportunities to offer needed service courses to grad students from other departments. Pending his official appointment as grad student rep to CC, Rohit offered to try to identify other areas of potential demand where we could provide service courses to non-CIS grad students. If such areas are discovered, CC will ask the relevant faculty to take a close look. * Discussion of issues involved in setting up a permanent course on ethics/professionalism to meet accreditation requirements Due to miscommunication between Bruce and Ken, we did not manage to discuss this. It will be on the agenda next week. ______________________________________________________________________________ Next meeting: Tuesday October 10, 12:30-1:30 in DL 698. Respectfully submitted, Bruce W. Weide, CC Chair
