Curriculum Committee ("CC") Minutes for 4 April 1995 ______________________________________________________________________________ Attending: Fujimura, Kerr, Ogden, Soundararajan, Weide, Yagel, Yeack, Zhao * Discussion of agenda for rest of this year CC determined that the following topics should be discussed in CC meetings this quarter, in approximately the following order: 1. Future of CIS 294I (Problem Solving Using C++) as a possible permanent service course; its relationship to introductory programming language for CIS majors (see last agenda item from this meeting) 2. Final consideration of capstone design course for hardware/software option in Engineering (see minutes of Mar 14 CC meeting) 3. Proposed Object-Oriented Analysis and Design, and Object-Oriented Programming, courses for CIS majors (see minutes of Feb 21 CC meeting) 4. Making 694J (Social and Ethical Issues in Computing) into a permanent course -- needed now to get us ready for accreditation. 5. Proposed changes to software spine courses -- consideration of preliminary syllabi for CIS 221, 222, 321, and 560 and 680 when ready 6. Various "clean-up" issues in the Course Offerings Bulletin (e.g., consistency among listings for courses with scheduled labs and lab credit hours; exclusions and prerequisites involving CIS 360/EE 265, CIS 675/EE 562, and CIS 670/CIS 673) CC agreed that item #6 above would be handled by individuals appointed by the chair, with e-mail consultation as needed, and final recommendations voted on by CC without (we hope) substantial use of precious meeting time. There are other potential issues, too, but so far we have nothing specific to work with. These include potential changes to CIS 211 to satisfy the business school; scientific computing program; networking lab course; and probably more we don't know about yet. * Discussion of course bulletin "clean-up" and similar activities proposed for e-mail deliberation This is listed as item #6 on the above list. * Preliminary report of ad hoc subcommittee on Introductory Programming Language Bruce presented a table showing a list of criteria for an introductory programming language for CIS majors (including EE computer engineering majors), and ratings of relative importance of these criteria by the ad hoc subcommittee members (Kerr, Ogden, Orin (EE), Soundararajan, Weide). Discussion of implications ensued, to be continued at a later meeting after the ad hoc subcommittee meets once more. _____________________________________________________________________________ Next meeting: Tuesday, April 11, 1995, 10:30-11:30 AM, in DL 698. NOTE: We are back to meeting starting at 10:30, not 10:45! Respectfully submitted, Bruce W. Weide, CC Chair
