Curriculum Committee ("CC") Minutes for 2 December 1994 ______________________________________________________________________________ Attending: Fujimura, Geroch, Kerr, Long, Mamrak, Ogden, Perlman, Soundararajan, Ware, Weide, Yagel, Yeack, Zhao 1. Handouts regarding computer graphics and capstone design proposals Handouts were provided to the CC members for feedback on two items that will be on the agenda early in Winter quarter: proposed revisions to the computer graphics sequence (681, 781, 782, 783), and introduction of a capstone design course for CSE hardware/software option in Engineering. The appropriate faculty to contact on these matters are, respectively, Roni and Feng. 2. Discussion of proposed course(s) on object-oriented analysis, design, and/or programming CC tentatively accepted ad hoc subcommittee recommendation to proceed with a 1 credit hour 459.XX course on C++. Neelam will put together a proposed syllabus and CC will try to approve it ASAP (probably by e-mail) so it can be brought for faculty approval first thing Winter quarter, to meet the Engineering deadline (January 15) for getting courses in the bulletin for Au 1995. After significant discussion, Neelam agreed to lead a group that will put together a proposed syllabus for a 694 "OO" course. There was general agreement, apparently, on the following points: a. The course will be considered temporary and experimental, and will be taught by a faculty member. It will be affected by -- and the experience teaching it probably will affect -- revisions currently being considered for the software spine courses (221, 222, 321, 560, 680). b. We will start with just one 694 course involving some mixture of object-oriented analysis, design, and programming issues. It is not clear what the emphasis will be, nor what can reasonably be expected to be treated in one quarter. We will not create two courses (for example, one for OOA/D and one for OOP) until we see how the first one goes. c. There will be a significant lab component, but it will be necessary to cover several fundamental conceptual issues as well. d. Although the course should not be considered "a C++ course", the programming language for the projects will be C++. e. Prerequisites will include 560 and 655. There was some sentiment for including 680, too, but the prerequisite question was not discussed at length. The committee looks forward to receiving a specific proposed syllabus early in Winter 1995 as a basis for continued discussion. We hope to have something decided so the course can be offered in Au 1995. It seems unlikely, given faculty teaching assignments for this year, that it can be offered before then. ______________________________________________________________________________ Next meeting: Tuesday, 10 January 1995, 10:30-11:20 AM, in DL 698. Respectfully submitted, Bruce W. Weide, CC Chair
