Curriculum Committee Agenda for 28 February 1996: * Discussion of proposed change to the teaching loads algorithm (Tom, Mukesh) Issue: teaching load credit for other than 3 credit-hour courses, to make teaching load credit for a course proportional to the number of credit hours for that course. The major substantive change is in a footnote, which is simplified from the current footnote. Designation of particular courses for unusual teaching credit is now listed as the responsibility of the Curriculum Committee. A few courses currently designated as eligible for 4/3 credit are listed in the current footnote. There also is a minor required change to the main text, where the current description now mentions "half-credit increments". This would be removed under the proposed revision because (like now) there will actually be 1/3 credit increments in some cases. So the current algorithm is a bit inconsistent on this point anyway. Proposed wording of the part of the algorithm at issue: "... For regular 9-month faculty at the rank of assistant professor and above the base load is 6 sections over the 3 on-duty quarters. The base load for full-time visiting faculty is 2 sections per quarter, and for full-time instructors 3 sections per quarter. Reductions from the base load for regular faculty will be made according to the guidelines below.* (See Introduction for conditions under which the base load for regular faculty may be increased.) A residual fractional course increment will be treated as a debit or a credit towards the ensuing year. ------ * The credit (number of "sections") in the teaching load algorithm is proportional to the number of credit hours a course carries. A three credit-hour course is equivalent to one section."
