Finals

I have posted the final lectures for the quarter. Please take a look.

In regards to the Final Exam, it will emphasize the material from after Midterm II (Uncertainty/Learning/etc...). But, the Final IS comprehensive, so there will be plenty of material from the previous two midterms on this exam. Please review all available material -- the study guides, midterms, lectures, homeworks and the book.

Finally, remember that the exam is 11:30am - 1:18pm on Monday, June 4.

CogFest

Next Friday, the Center for Cognitive Science is putting on CogFest. This is an opportunity for them to highlight the various areas in the university that investigate how the mind works.

I'd recommend that you stop by for the poster session. There will be topics spanning a variety of disciplines, which may include Linguistics, Psychology, Computer Science, Music, etc. This is a good chance to see strong, interdisciplinary research, where many of the discoveries have direct applicability to A.I.

For more information, go here.

Two Announcements

Please bring a copy of Homework #4 to class on Monday. We will discuss the solutions, so that you'll have the answers to study from.

If you missed portions of the video, please get the notes from a fellow classmate. For additional high-level reminder about what was on the video, please go here.

Title: Simultaneous regression and inverse regression

Abstract:
This talk concerns models on high-dimensional data that are simultaneously predictive -- regression -- and also infer the underlying geometric structure of the data relevant to prediction -- inverse regression.

The underlying premise in the analysis is when thousands of measurements are taken from physical and biological systems the space spanned lies on or near a low-dimensional manifold. This premise has led to various estimation and learning problems grouped under the heading of "manifold learning."

This talk places the problem of simultaneous regression and inverse regression in the manifold framework. The problems of dimensionality reduction, variable selection, and graphical model inference are addressed within this framework.

Theory as well as applications to gene expression analysis and digit recognition will be presented. The word Bayes will not appear in this talk.
