· 3/5 – You can bring a “cheat sheet” to the final exam. One 8x11 sheet of paper (no layers), front and back. You can put anything you want on it. It can be typed, handwritten, copied, etc, doesn’t matter. You MUST have your own page (i.e. you can’t share with anyone) and you MUST turn in your cheat sheet with your exam. So, if you want to keep what you put on your cheat sheet, you have to copy it before you come in to the final exam. BTW, the Excel functions will be on the spreadsheet page of the exam per usual.
· 3/5 – The FINAL EXAM is on Monday March 15th 1:30-3:18pm in DL113 (per the syllabus). See above for cheat sheet instructions.
· 3/5 - You must bring your picture ID to the final exam or you will be asked to leave and go get it.

· 2/18 – Quiz4 is still on Tuesday as specified on the syllabus. The material it covers is on slide pages 49-61 and Access course note section pages 1-51. There are really only 2 practice problems in section 2.2 on these pages, but a great amount of explanation. Remember to work the practice quizzes given below in the ANSWER POSTINGS section.

· 1/24 – Quiz2 is Tuesday (per the syllabus schedule) the second hour of class. It will cover slide pages 23-32 and exercises 10-18. The subject areas include: unit problems, multiple worksheets, what-if vs goal seek, charts, relational expressions as well as AND/OR/NOT functions.
· 1/20 - We went over in class that I do not want to see you putting quotes around Boolean values. Here’s the file that I went over in class to show you why: BooleanQuoteIssues
· 1/20 – Here’s a list of Quiz1 functions for creating a study sheet (htm). This is just an option/recommendation to help you study :o) This way, you create it when you study for each quiz putting down important facts and examples about each function to help you remember them; then you have a reminder when studying for the midterm and last but not least, you have part of your “cheat sheet” for the final exam. It will come in handy!
· 1/20 – Quiz1 will be handed back in lab on Friday. Your code is designated next to the score. I will update the grades website with Quiz1 grades as soon as I know they are entered into the gradebooks.

· 1/15 – We started units problems 1/14 and are on track material-wise according to the syllabus.
· 1/15 – Quiz1 will be given as scheduled the second hour of class. Don’t forget to bring your picture ID. The material for the exam covers slide pages 1-22 and exercises 1-9. There will be 10-12 true/false questions and 7-8 excel problem solving questions. You will be assigned seats for the exam only which will be sent around the first hour of class. Since Monday is a holiday, I will have extra office hours Tuesday morning from 9am-noon :o)
· 1/12 – Week1 examples… Here is the original and here is the key.
· 1/8 – You should now be able to complete exercises 1-5 in the Excel portion of your course notes book. The solutions are on the cengage/textbook website, but if you don’t have your access code yet, the solutions are on the free access link that you can get to thru Carmen (content tab then part II. Course Materials C. Free Access Link – 1st week materials).
· 1/7 – We’ve covered slide pages 1-17 so far. We’ll review and do more practice problems on this material first thing next class period, so practice practice practice and have questions to ask :o)
· 1/5 – If issues come up with accounts for online access, you can email cengage directly at courseware@cengage.com. If you continue to have problems, email the course coordinator the first week of classes (gross.142@osu.edu) and then after that, contact your lab TA asap.
· 1/5 - I will email everyone formally registered for the class sometime this afternoon with an attachment that contains the detailed syllabus. Please make sure you check your osu.edu account for this file.

FIRST OF THE QUARTER ANNOUNCEMENTS
EXAM and GRADES
· FYI – Misconduct Issues?
· FYI - You MUST bring a picture ID to every exam.
· FYI- You have ONLY 1 week after graded materials are returned to the class to update a score.
· FYI - I will have copies of your graded exams in my office, so you can email me questions about your grade and I can check the copy :o)
· FYI – Graded exams likely will not be given back for a week.
· FYI - In order to see where you stand in the class, you can download the grades website page into Excel. Just copy the information from the web page (highlight the data and press CTRL-C), open an excel workbook, choose the "home" ribbon, then paste and paste special; then choose the text option and click on OK. You now have the data stored in an Excel spreadsheet.
· FYI - Individual grades are posted ONLY on my website. I do not post grades or announcements on Carmen. Also, the data needs to be uploaded, so you won't see automatic updates in grades thru the website when the gradebook is updated. I will do my best to update these pages at least once a week. There is a date on the page so you know when the last update was made.
· FYI - Grades will be posted by a given random code. This code will be given to you when the first quiz is returned.
· FYI - Assigned seats will be given during the first hour of class prior to each exam. You are required to sit in these seats ONLY for the actual exams.
· FYI - You will not be allowed to leave the room once an exam starts.
· FYI - The syntax of all the Excel functions covered in lecture will be given on the tests.
· FYI - No calculators can be used for any exam. Too much can be stored in them! Some students will then ask if they can bring in a really simple calculator. Again, the answer is no. The reason for this is because not all students would be willing to buy even a small calculator and other students will forget to bring them, putting them at a "disadvantage". Thus, until buying a certain type/style of calculator is part of the requirements for the course, no calculators will be allowed :o(
COURSE INFORMATION
· FYI - Be sure to carefully read the Course Information section of your Course Notes (prior to the "Excel" tab), as well as my website Syllabus link material.
· FYI - Remember to check my schedule for appointment times if you can't make office hours.
· FYI - When you email me, please be sure to mention your lab section. There are 2 gradebooks per lecture section for the course and they are separated by lab section, so if you have grade concerns, I need to know which file to look in. THANKS!
· FYI - You are responsible for your work if you are working from home. Everyone can work in the lab to complete the assignments so PC problems from home will not be acceptable excuses for not completing your pre-lab work on time.
· FYI - Please remember to contact your lab instructor about lab absences, questions, concerns, etc. If you have further issues about any particular situation, please don’t hesitate to contact me at that point.
· FYI - You are responsible for the missed material should you not make it to class.
· FYI - Instructions will be given in class if you want to change lab and/or lecture sections.
· FYI - Remember that the TUTOR ROOM (DL176) is (will be) available. See the CSE200 Carmen website for details. These won't be updated until sometime during the end of the first week or beginning of the second week of classes.
· FYI - This class will take a significant amount of your time. Please be aware that spending 15-20 hours a week on this class is not unusual i.e. 4 hours lecture,2 hours lab, plus 2 hours out of class for every hour spent in class! 6 hrs in class; 12 hrs out for a total of 18 per week... and that's just an average!
TEXT REMINDERS
· FYI - I will get many questions about the book… a lot of students will ask if they can use a friend’s access code for the Cengage website. My answer/reply is that can't answer this question! It's the same as you saying, "Hey, I like the music you are playing on your ipod, can you make me a copy?” What I can say is that you can get the in-lab files from Carmen and the pre-lab files as well as the course material problems (as shown in your course notes book from Uniprint under the Excel and Access tabs) can only be accessed thru the Cengage learning site (this is what you need the access code for); the online text (so you don't have to carry it around) can also be used at this point.
· Purchase: Course Notes for the current quarter from UniPrint. Yes, you can use a previous quarter version if you like although most of the answers will already be written on the pages which is something that would best be learned/practiced starting from a blank page (imho). Don’t forget to print the pre-labs from the website.
· Purchase: Online Course Text materials at the following website (http://tosucse200.ichaptersbuy.com) for ISBN 1435429265. This site will provide you with an access code to the materials. Hard copies will also be sent via UPS. This site has been setup to get the lowest possible costs. The online materials (in print and access code) are also available at the OSU bookstores.
