· 5/26 – You can bring a “cheat sheet” to the final exam since it’s cumulative and contains both Excel and Access materials. One 8x11 sheet of paper (no layers), front and back. You can put anything you want on it. It can be typed, handwritten, copied, etc, doesn’t matter. You MUST have your own page (i.e. you can’t share with anyone) and you MUST turn in your cheat sheet with your exam. So, if you want to keep what you put on your cheat sheet, you have to copy it before you come in to the exam.

· 5/26 – You must bring your picture ID to the final exam or you will be asked to leave and go get it; and you will not be given extra time to take the exam!

· 5/3 - Your midterm is Thursday 5/5. You will get 1.5 hours to complete the test. There are 16 questions. All of the functions are given on the exam (per all the sample midterms given below). Be sure to check out the instructions on the AU10 midterm. The exam covers all of the Excel problems in your course notes. The slide pages covered on the midterm are pages 11-43.

· 5/3 – Office hours for the midterm week only are Wednesday 10:00am-2:30pm and Thursday 10:00am-11:30am

· 5/3 – For the 1:30 lab, there was a mixup with the code in the gradebook. If you asked about your code in advance, this will likely be the incorrect code. The code written on your Quiz1 is the correct code for looking up your grade.

· 4/25 - Quiz3 will cover IF, HLOOKUP/VLOOKUP (i.e. reference functions) and Financial functions ONLY. There will be 6 questions: 1 IF, 1 nested IF, 1 vlookup, 1 hlookup, and 2 financial.

· 4/25 – Remember, only I can change an exam score. I have copies in my office and the solutions are posted here, so please be sure to check your work. You have a maximum of ONE WEEK to ask about your score from the day the papers are handed back to the class.

· 4/5 – Here’s a list of Quiz1 functions for creating a study sheet (htm). This is just an option/recommendation to help you study :o) This way, you create it when you study for each quiz putting down important facts and examples about each function to help you remember them; then you have a reminder when studying for the Midterm as well as the Final exam. It will come in handy!

· 4/5 - Just a reminder about where the solutions to the Excel problems are… they are on the textbook website, under the “Course Materials” menu option (the leftmost menu option), click on the Lecture with the correct description of material, then click on one of the “Examples” for the Excel problems as an Excel file; the solution is right next to it as a Word file.

EXAM and GRADES

· FYI – Misconduct Issues? If you can’t answer this question, please be sure to review the course information page.

· FYI - You MUST bring a picture ID to every exam.

· FYI- You have ONLY 1 week after graded materials are returned to the class to update a score. 

· FYI - I will have copies of your graded exams in my office, so you can email me questions about your grade and I can check the copy :o)

· FYI – Graded exams likely will not be given back for a week. However, because quizzes are given only one week apart, a copy of your exam will be given back in lab with the solutions being posted so you can check your work.

· FYI - In order to see where you stand in the class, you can download the grades website page into Excel.  Just copy the information from the web page (highlight the data and press CTRL-C), open an excel workbook, choose the "home" ribbon, then paste and paste special; then choose the text option and click on OK.  You now have the data stored in an Excel spreadsheet.

· FYI - Individual grades are posted ONLY on my website. I do not post grades or announcements on Carmen.  Also, the data needs to be uploaded, so you won't see automatic updates in grades thru the website when the gradebook is updated.  I will do my best to update these pages at least once a week. There is a date on the page so you know when the last update was made.

· FYI - Grades will be posted by a given random code. This code will be given to you when the first quiz is returned.

· FYI - Assigned seats will be given during the first hour of class prior to each exam.  You are required to sit in these seats ONLY for the actual exams.

· FYI - You will not be allowed to leave the room once an exam starts.

· FYI - The syntax of all the Excel functions covered in lecture will be given on the tests.

· FYI - No calculators can be used for any exam.  Too much can be stored in them!  Some students will then ask if they can bring in a really simple calculator.  Again, the answer is no. The reason for this is because not all students would be willing to buy even a small calculator and other students will forget to bring them, putting them at a "disadvantage".  Thus, until buying a certain type/style of calculator is part of the requirements for the course, no calculators will be allowed :o(

COURSE INFORMATION

· FYI - Be sure to carefully read the Course Information section of your Course Notes (prior to the "Excel" tab), as well as my website Syllabus link material.

· FYI - Remember to check my schedule for appointment times if you can't make office hours.

· FYI - When you email me, please be sure to mention your lab section. There are 2 gradebooks per lecture section for the course and they are separated by lab section, so if you have grade concerns, I need to know which file to look in. THANKS!

· FYI - You are responsible for your work if you are working from home.  Everyone can work in the lab to complete the assignments so PC problems from home will not be acceptable excuses for not completing your pre-lab work on time.

· FYI - Please remember to contact your lab instructor about lab absences, questions, concerns, etc. If you have further issues about any particular situation, please don’t hesitate to contact me at that point.

· FYI - You are responsible for the missed material should you not make it to class.

· FYI - Instructions will be given in class if you want to change lab and/or lecture sections.

· FYI - Remember that the TUTOR ROOM (DL176) is (will be) available.  See the CSE200 Carmen website for details. These won't be updated until sometime during the end of the first week or beginning of the second week of classes.

· FYI - This class will take a significant amount of your time.  Please be aware that spending 15-20 hours a week on this class is not unusual i.e. 4 hours lecture,2 hours lab, plus 2 hours out of class for every hour spent in class! 6 hrs in class; 12 hrs out for a total of 18 per week... and that's just an average!

TEXT REMINDERS

· FYI - I will get many questions about the book… a lot of students will ask if they can use a friend’s access code for the Cengage website. My answer/reply is that can't answer this question! It's the same as you saying, "Hey, I like the music you are playing on your ipod, can you make me a copy?” What I can say is that you can get the in-lab files from Carmen and the pre-lab files as well as the course material problems (as shown in your course notes book from Uniprint under the Excel and Access tabs) can only be accessed thru the Cengage learning site (this is what you need the access code for); the online text (so you don't have to carry it around) can also be used at this point.

· IF you get ZIP FILES when downloading from courseware, you can do the following: Once you download the file and save it (do not unzip or open folder after download), you must right click the zipped file from windows explorer, click on properties, and then in the General tab under "Type of File" the next line is "Opens With" and an option to "Change..." the program that the file opens with. Do this for Every Zipped File… or just download all prelab files to a jump drive in our labs to avoid the problem.

· Purchase: Course Notes for the current quarter from the university bookstores. Currently, the OSU Bookstore in the Central Classroom building and the Barnes and Nobles bookstore in the Gateway are carrying it. Yes, you can use a previous quarter version if you like although most of the answers will already be written on the pages which is something that would best be learned/practiced starting from a blank page (imho).  Don’t forget to print the pre-labs from the website.

· Purchase: Online Course Text materials at the following website (http://tosucse200.ichaptersbuy.com) for ISBN 1435429265.  This site will provide you with an access code to the materials.  Hard copies will also be sent via UPS – whether requesting the hard copy or not, the access code comes to you in the mail… and you have to sign for it!  This site has been setup to get the lowest possible costs.  The online materials (in print and access code) are also available at the OSU bookstores.
