To: Spring Quarter 2011 CSE 200 students – all sections

The staff of CSE 200 would like to welcome you to our winter quarter classes  and to convey some information regarding the most economical way to obtain the course materials that will be required.   Each student is expected to have the following:

(1)     A set of course notes which can be purchased from OSU bookstore.  This spiral bound document contains the lecture slides, practice problems, sample exams, and the pre-lab assignments for weeks 2 through 10.  This course notes packet can be purchased in person at the book store located on High Street or by Central Classrooms.  Please note that prior quarter notes contain some different materials/assignments and therefore is not recommended. The price is around $25.

(2)     The online course text materials including starting files for pre-lab assignments is titled Computer Aided Problem Solving for Business for OSU, Courseware 2nd Edition (ISBN 1-4354-2926-5).  The online materials include the course text, practice problem files and required pre-lab assignment starting files.  Also available with these online materials are the answer keys to many of the sample problems in the course notes.   The online text can be purchased directly from the publisher at http://tosucse200.ichaptersbuy.com . When you get to this site – just scroll down - do not enter the isbn as the book title is below. Please note the following:

o    Once purchased, the publisher will send (via US mail) the online access PIN code and a companion paper version of the reading materials (paper version does not include starting files/answer keys).  The online price is $99.99 including shipping. Online access is free for the first week of the quarter, however, we recommend that you order EARLY to avoid any potential delays in obtaining these materials.

o    This material is also available in OSU bookstores but usually at a higher cost (around $140).  DO NOT BUY USED MATERIALS!  Some bookstores/websites claim to have this material for a cheaper price – “used” or with a “new” PIN.  Most of the time it turns out that students do not get a valid PIN number and therefore must re-purchase the materials!

o    Please Note: For those retaking CSE200 your account can be reactivated for free.  Please contact Debby Gross at gross.142@osu.edu as soon as possible so you can resume using these materials.  You must have been an authorized user in a previous quarter to qualify.  All other students are expected to purchase a new version of these materials.

o    Once you get these materials it is NOT necessary to register online prior to class.  Materials for the first week of the quarter can be found from a link on the CSE 200 Carmen site (this will be activated before classes resume).  Detailed instructions for registering for this online site are embedded the Lab 1 assignment that you will complete during week 1 of the quarter (Lab 1 document will be distributed in lecture).    At that time you will need the PIN code from the publisher. If you do wish to register prior to lab 1, Do not use the instructions that come with the PIN card – but the ones in lab1 including using your OSU email address as your user name.

We realize that keeping the costs of materials down is important to students.  In 2008 the price of a new text book for this course was over $180 and used ones over $100 at the bookstores.  Given rising prices the book costs would now have an expected price tag of over $200. This online format with companion print materials (unbound) is much more cost effective for all, but it must be purchased by all and cannot be re-sold at the end of the quarter.  If you have any questions please contact Debby Gross at gross.142@osu.edu.

We wish you all a happy/safe spring break and look forward meeting you in the spring!
