HELPFUL EXCEL HINTS file

  • 12/9 – Grades were updated earlier today. Please check :O)
  • 12/9 - It was on my list of things to do for the lecturer to go over the sample final exam key on the last day of class. In case all did not go as planned, here’s the sample final key as stored in the course information files: key.
  • 12/8 - My office hours will be held in the tutor room which is DL176 (not at Starbucks). I will be there on Tues and Wed evening from 6-7:30pm.
  • 12/8Here is the crib/cheat sheet that you may print out onto an 8.5x11 sheet of paper and HAND WRITE notes on the front and back for use during the final exam. You cannot use notebook or any other type of paper. If you type on the sheet and/or use a larger size paper, your sheet will be confiscated and you will not be permitted to use it during the exam. The crib/cheat sheet must be turned in and attached to your final exam paper.
  • 12/8 – I will have office hours from 6-7:30pm on both Tuesday (12/9) and Wednesday (12/10) evenings (after jury duty). I was thinking of going to the Starbucks on High Street that is across from the Ohio Union garage, but I might be able to use the tutor room, which would be preferable. It will be one place or the other, so stay tuned :o)
  • 12/1 - CL112A will likely be taken however there will be plenty of room in the main lab for everyone to work. REMEMBER to sign the attendance sheet and turn in your extra credit before leaving; this is your responsibility. For the 9:30 section, the TA is Tony Rudd; for the 12:30 section, Abon will be in the lab to help you. Thursday is also a class day, with 4 pts of attendance to be earned… Matt Lang will be the TA for the final exam review for the 9:30 section and Debby Gross will be the lecturer for the 12:30 section final exam review. The final exam dates are on the syllabus for you to check, if necessary.
  • 11/30 - Remember to email if you have any questions or concerns. I’ll be answering email as often as possible :o)
  • 11/30 - Tuesday class, December 2nd, will be held in lab, CL112A. Please check before class to make sure there have been no changes to this location!!! There’s a chance that there might be a conflict, so please check back for more information, just in case.
  • 11/30 - Remember that you can submit your project anytime between now and Wed Dec 3rd at noon. You’ll see the name of the submit folder to be “finalproject”. Please be sure to come to lab/class on Tuesday, though, even if you are done with your project for your attendance points and to fill out the quarterly evaluations :o) I appreciate your feedback!
  • 11/30 – I will have “office hours” in CL112 on Tuesday evening hopefully from 6pm-7:30pm. I say hopefully because I’m not sure when I’ll be released from jury duty but I figure no later than 5pm, so I should be able to make it to lab by 6pm :o) Again, stay tuned for updates. Also, I will be having office hours over the weekend as well as on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings of final exam week – likely in a coffee shop somewhere on campus close to high street. I’ll let you know exactly where when I know.
  • 11/20 - I will have open office hours from 10:30 to 12noon and 2:30-4:30pm on Friday (11/21/08 – have lunch conference meeting) as well as on Monday (11/24/08) from 8:30-5pm.
  • 11/20 - Sample Exam3 key.
  • 11/20 - Employee database file; key to section 2.3 problem.
  • 11/20 - New Extra Credit assignment given out today and is due the Tuesday after Thanksgiving weekend (12/2/08). Here is the database file so you can work thru the problem online to check your answers.
  • 11/19 - Answers to the Extra Credit given 11/13 and due 11/18 are here.
  • 11/18 - Extra empty practice grids for Access questions… it’s a word file.
  • 11/18 - HW#7 was assigned for you to print off of Carmen and is due Thursday (11/20).
  • 11/13 - HW#6 was given out (you can get a copy off Carmen) and is due Tuesday. HW#7 (last homework) will be given out Tuesday and will be due Thursday.
  • 11/13 – Attendance will be taken every day from now on for 4 pts each day.
  • 11/13 – The final project was handed out. I’ll be sure to bring extra copies to class next week.
  • 11/13 – Extra credit was given on Thursday and is due Tuesday. Here’s the file. Extra credit will also be given out again on Tuesday… practice practice practice ;o)
  • 10/31 - Lab7 pre-lab asks for you to download a picture; that picture is now on Carmen for you to download.
  • 10/31 – MONDAY OFFICE HOURS need to be changed… I will be substitute teaching a CSE200 class from 1:30-3:18, so will not be in my office from 1:15-3:30… sorry for the change in plans.
  • 10/30 - I will have office hours ALL DAY on Monday Nov. 3rd from 9am-5pm :o) Please stop by with homework or other questions you may have about Exam2.
  • 10/30 – Be sure to get HW#5 off Carmen – it is due on Tuesday Nov. 4th.
  • 10/29 - Sample Exam2 key.
  • 10/29 – CSE200 Quiz2 extra credit problem: test, key.
  • 10/28 - Don’t forget Exam#2 is a week from today – Tuesday Nov 4th. I will be reviewing for this on Thursday.
  • 10/28 – HW#4 was given out today and is due Thursday. HW#5 will be given out Thursday and be due next Tuesday.
  • 10/22 - On Carmen, the excel file for HW#3 needs one correction. On the costs worksheet, delete the “lowest fare” column. This allows the “discounted fare” column to now be in column D which matches problem#9 for this homework.
  • 10/21 - HW#3 was given out today and is due Thursday 10/23.
  • 10/21 - Extra credit problem is moved to from today (see below 10/16 comment) to Thursday.
  • 10/21 – 2 pts for attendance was given today.
  • 10/16 - Prelab 4 page 2: the figure's column F is wrong.  It appears that formula is only considering the 'not above average' criteria asked for in the question.  Looking at the data yourself, you can probably easily see that only one of the cells in column F should be TRUE.  Write your formula to answer the question rather than to make the spreadsheet look exactly like the Figure.
  • 10/16 – We went over in class that I do not want to see you putting quotes around boolean values.  Here's the file that I went over in class to show you why:  BooleanQuoteIssues
  • 10/16 - HW#3 will be given out Tuesday and an extra credit quiz problem will be either given out or done in class… not sure which yet and not sure when the homework will be due yet either… stay tuned ;o)
  • 10/15 – DON’T FORGET to bring a PICTURE ID to all your exams.
  • 10/15 - FYI HOMEWORKS… there will be 7 homework problems given out this quarter; hw#5 and hw#7 are each worth 15 points and the others are worth 10 pts each for a total of 80 pts.
  • 10/9 - Sample Exam 1 from the course notes book - key
  • 10/9 – CSE200 Quiz1 practice - key
  • 10/7 - It’s tough, I know, but there is always a due date for all turned in material. It’s hard for me to not accept a HW or extra credit problem from a student who showed up late to class, but unless you have a documented excuse for missing class, I will not be able to accept any material that is turned in late. I will also not accept email submissions either – this makes the problem my problem - “but I emailed you my HW” - and with 80 of you and one of me, that is not acceptable. Be aware as well that extra credit points cannot be made up even with an excused absence; additional points will be given with the max number of points being ~80% of those given.
  • 10/7 - For Pre-lab3 Part 1, download the Silver Dollar file from Carmen. This is just a starting point for you so you don’t have to do all the busy work :o) see Figure 2-4 on page EX 89. Be sure to start at page EX87 to make sure that all the data is entered correctly and continue to page EX135 per the lab directions.
  • 10/7 – HW#2 was given out today and is due in a week; next Tuesday, 10/14.
  • 10/7 – Exam 1 will be given per the date on the syllabus.
  • 10/7 – You will be given another extra credit problem during class on Thursday worth 3 pts. This will be an old quiz that will let you know how prepared you are for your first Exam.
  • 10/2 - For the BMI problem in pre-lab2, the instructions on page 3 bullet 3, just change the weight values corresponding to the BMI values to red “by hand”. Ignore the instructions that the red values must automatically update with the change in BMI values :o)
  • 10/2 - REMINDER: Both the HW and the extra credit point problems are due at the beginning of class.
  • 10/2 - Also due Tuesday is a 3 pt extra credit point problem. On one side of a piece of 8.5x11 sheet of paper, create your own unique copy down and across problem. Be sure to include a worksheet (from excel or handwritten) and write the problem similar to those problems you see in your practice problems.
  • 9/30 - HW#1 was given out today and is due next Tuesday 10/7/08. Don’t forget that there’s a copy of the homework on Carmen as well as access to the excel files used.
  • 9/30 - Tutoring hours: http://www.cse.ohio-state.edu/cse200/tutoring.htm
  • 9/25 - Be sure to BRING THE LAB1 ASSIGNMENT TO LAB THIS WEEK.
  • 9/25 - Welcome to CSE101 :o)
  • FYI - Remember to check my schedule for appointment times if you can't make office hours.
  • FYI - Grades will be posted on Carmen. Please check them periodically to make sure that they have been entered correctly. This is your responsibility. Also, the data needs to be uploaded, so you won't see automatic updates.  I will do my best to update these pages at least once a week.
  • FYI - You will not be allowed to leave the room once an exam starts.
  • FYI - The syntax of all the Excel functions covered in lecture will be given on the tests.
  • FYI - No calculators can be used for any exam.  Too much can be stored in them!  Some students will then ask if they can bring in a really simple calculator.  Again, the answer is no. The reason for this is because not all students would be willing to buy even a small calculator and other students will forget to bring them, putting them at a "disadvantage".  Thus, until buying a certain type/style of calculator is part of the requirements for the course, no calculators will be allowed :o(
  • FYI - When you email me, please be sure to mention your lecture section. I am teaching 2 sections of CSE101 this quarter so if you have grade concerns, I need to know which file to look in. THANKS!
  • FYI - You are responsible for your work if you are working from home.  Everyone can work in the lab to complete the assignments so PC problems from home will not be acceptable excuses for not completing your pre-lab work on time!
  • FYI - Be sure to check Carmen for Course Materials under: Content, Course Materials, then choose the correct problem based on the problem number/name given in the Course Notes.  The files are there for you to use for practice and chapter review solutions are also given :o)
  • FYI- You have ONLY 1 week after grades are given out to update a score.
  • FYI - Please remember to contact me at your earliest convenience for lab or exam absences.
  • FYI - Remember that the TUTOR ROOM (DL176) is (will be) available.  See the CSE101 Carmen website for details. These won't be updated until sometime during the second week of classes.
  • FYI - Be sure to carefully read the Course Information section of your Course Notes (prior to the "Excel" tab), as well as my website Syllabus.
  • FYI - You are responsible for the missed material should you not make it to class.
  • FYI - If you need/want to change lab and/or lecture sections, you will need to talk with me after the first class.
  • FYI – You will be required to bring a picture ID to ALL EXAMS.
  • FYI – Although not shown on the syllabus, class participation and extra credit points will be awarded occasionally. There will be no makeups for such points if you did not attend class for whatever reason, however, I will award only a maximum number of points but give over that limit, so that everyone has a chance the earn the highest number of points. My recommendation: Come to class :o)
  • FYI - This class will take a significant amount of your time.  Please be aware that spending 14-16 hours a week on this class is not unusual i.e. 3 hours lecture,2 hours lab, plus 2 hours out of class for every hour spent in class! 5 hrs in class; 10 hrs out for a total of 15 per week... and that's just an average!
  • FYI - I highly recommend that you buy the books. I know they are expensive... sorry :o( but you need them. You can buy used ones, but only those for Office 2007 using Vista. As for the course notes, you can also have a used version however, I don't recommend it. There will be things written in the book on both the slides and the course problems and it would be best if these things weren't already there. Also, changes are made to the pre-lab assignments from quarter to quarter. If you do have a used set of course notes, be sure to print off your pre-lab assignments from Carmen i.e. do not use the ones in a used set of course notes.
  • FYI – I only post announcements here, not on Carmen.
  • FYI – “There are no good excuses and there are rarely any extenuating circumstances” -KReeves
  • TEXT REMINDER - "TO DO" list for 1st week cse101 students (also seen on Carmen):
