Exam Grading
The following are just my current thoughts on how I'm going to conduct the midterm and final.
It may turn out, however, that I make part or all of the final to be take-home.
Or I might allow use of the book for in-class exams.
I haven't made the final decision yet - but this is it unless I announce otherwise.
-
There will be one midterm and one final.
There will be no other quizzes or tests.
I will grade both the midterm and final.
-
Both the midterm and final will be closed book, closed notes, no calculators or other material.
-
In general, the questions will require some type of short discussion answer.
-
The most important feature of your answer should be the reasoning behind your actaul answer.
I have been known to accept both 'YES' and 'NO' answers for the same questions, if the reasons given demonstrate an understanding of the material.
I'm not looking for you to regurgitate equations or phrases; I'm looking for you to demonstrate that you have a grasp of the material by being able to use it to explain things.
-
There will be about ten questions on the midterm and eighteen on the final.
-
You will not be expected to remember complicated equations or expressions.
You will be expected to explain any equation covered in class if I give it to you on a test.
You will be expected to remember relatively simple equations and expressions (e.g., definition of dot product, aspect ratio).
You will be expected to explain the advantages and disadvantages of the various techniques, show how to calculate things, etc. The problems in the book are a good place to get some idea of the questions I might ask.
-
There will be no questions concerning Motif on the midterm or final.
You are expected to learn Motif in order to do the lab and that's it.
-
The final will be comprehensive, with an emphasis on material covered after the midterm.
