For examples, see the previous student work linked to off of the main class web page, especially Autumn '08 and Autumn '03. Both have examples of soft shadows, glossiness and translucency; the latter has examples of motion blur and depth of field.

Objective

Assignment

• Call your program lab6.
• As before, the execution of your program should produce a .ppm file specified in the scene description file.
• As before, your lab will be graded under UNIX using the following (assuming the scene description file is called input.txt and the corresponding .ppm file is called output.ppm:

• Requirement:
  • Anti-aliasing: Implement distributed ray tracing using jittered spatial 4x4 subsampling. Shoot one ray per sub-sample.
• Options - choose 3:
  • Soft shadows: shoot one ray to a randomized, but limited, area around a point light source to compute soft shadows.
  • Gloss: sample in the direction of the computed reflection vector
  • Translucency: sample in the direction of the computed refrection vector
  • Motion blur: sample during a time interval. You can hardcode the movement of one or more objects
  • Depth of Field: sample a point on the lens and trace a ray to the focal point
• Include with your submission up to 2 or 3 interesting scene description files that demonstrate your distributed ray tracing effect.
• Include with your submission a README file explaining your implementation and the scenes.
• Include with your submission some image files showing results. These can be submitted or made available off a personal web page or using something like Picases Web Albums - let the grader know via email or via the README file how to access the images.
