Source: chair of particular committee announcing meeting, and Marty asking me to take minutes (week before faculty meeting). Specifics: - who am I advising? - degree requirements (areas of specialization) - course prerequisites - sign for withdrawl from classes Source: undergraduate advising office, "useful documents" see below ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Useful Department Documents Item: Grad student dept. handbook Annual Dept. Report Source: Grad student dept. handbook fro "new grad orientation" session in the department (organized by Elley) Annual Dept. Report was in office when I arrived. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Laptop projector request Item: Where to borrow laptop projector for class uses. Source: Make a reservation in advance at the request web page: http://www.cis.ohio-state.edu/projreq Pick it up at the SOC lab (8th floor) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Travel Request Item: What do I need to do for getting travel reimbursement? Source: Submit a travel request form with estimated expenses to the responsible staff member before you go on a travel. (This way you will be covered by some sort of travel insurance). Submit a detailed reimbursement form with all receipts for major items once you get back. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Class permission Slip Item: What do I do if non-CIS major students ask for permissions to classes? Source: Stu -- Don't sign any slip before the quarter starts. ********************************************************************** ** COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING ** ********************************************************************** Foreign Travel Grant Item: $700 for foreign travel for attending a conference this grant is easily (automatically?) obtained from the COE Awarded at most once every 2 years (per faculty member) Source: word-of-mouth at new faculty lunches ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Assistance for grant proposal submission Item: Where can I get help for assisting grant proposal submission Source: In addition to the Department's reponsible staff (Qunicy Howard and Sandy Hill), Kyle Smith (2-3149) in the College of Engineering is the one who handles all proposals. He is also very helpful in terms of listing budgets and telling you what paper work you need to complete. ********************************************************************** ** UNIVERSITY ** ********************************************************************** ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Useful University Documents Item: university faculty/staff phone directories, course-offerings for current year, graduate school handbook, bulletins from College of Eng. and College of Arts & Science Source: Old phonebooks were in my office when I moved in, graduate school handbook was available at "new grad orientation" session in the department (organized by Elley). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zero Interest Loan Item: a zero-interest loan is available from the Office of Academic Affairs for up to $1500 (for 3 months) for new faculty Source: word-of-mouth among new faculty ---------------------------------------------------------------------- New Faculty Mailing List Item: there's a mailing list for new faculty at OSU. A group gets together every Wednesday to have lunch (usually at the Faculty Club). A useful source of information (such as the zero-interest loan!). Source: Gerald ---------------------------------------------------------------------- "Tomorrow's Professor" Mailing List Item: there's a mailing list for new science and engineering faculty. It is moderated and low-volume, but often has useful advice and observations on the process of being junior faculty.
