In-class exercise: Dialog Acts
Instructions
Attached are 2 dialog fragments (medadvisor and callhome) and a coding sheet. Write down your
opinion of the correct values of each DAMSL tag for the indicated
utterance numbers. (DAMSL coding manual.) A few utterances before and after the
annotation targets are provided so that you can see the context.
It will probably save you some time reading and understanding the annotation
guidelines if you annotate one dimension at a time for all of the
utterances (for instance, code the "Conventional" tag for all
utterances). If the utterance does not meet the criteria for that
tag, just leave that cell in the coding sheet blank.
Work individually first, until about 2:55. Then choose a partner that
you haven't worked with before.
Partner activity: With your partner, determine the correct answer for
the Influencing-addressee-future-action tag and the Agreement tag
for each utterance.
Individual Question: (Send your answer to this question to Donna by
Wednesday night at 11:59 PM) Complete the coding sheet for both
dialogs and determine which tag you used most frequently in the
Medadvisor fragment and which tag you used most in the Callhome fragment.
Was the most frequent tag in each dialog the same or different?
Why do you think that is?
