Services & Resources
Skills
TWiCE members bring a broad range of skills and
expertise to client projects. Although internal projects will be
primarily developed using a .NET framework for handheld PC applications, the
diversity and embedded training of provisional members will enable TWiCE
to participate in projects in analysis, design and implementation phases of the system development life
cycle. Our hardware resources may be used to test small Enterprise
solutions.
Markets
TWiCE Projects address three markets:
local industry, academia, community non-profits.
Women who are members of
TWiCE-Industry contract with local
industry professionals as consultants or interns to provide commercially
viable software products and services. Since September 2003, TWiCE
members have been engaged to develop Information Technology Strategic Plans
for local government and regional transit agencies.
Client Pricing
TWiCE is a small organization with minimal overhead
and variable
costs. We offer state-of-the-art resources at very competitive prices.
However, because of the bureaucratic nature of our situation, and the
part-time involvement of our members, we do not claim to be able to
provide professional services on a market timeline.
In recognition of our market strengths and weaknesses, prices will be
set to cover costs. Typically a one year internship will cost $25k and
a ten-week project involving two students, under the
guidance of a faculty member will be $7890.
Duration
Because of the transient nature of the student members, many
projects will start and finish in the same 10 week quarter.
However, when resources can be stabilized, such as with an internship,
longer commitments are possible.
Women who are members of TWiCE-URO
(Undergraduate Research Opportunities) work with a faculty advisor to
develop original specifications and applications to attract women and
underrepresented groups to computing. These applications are intended to be
effective for use in middle and high school math and science curricula, as
well as short department-hosted workshops. In early 2004, TWiCE-URO members
conducted analysis and design on Java teaching tools, lab assignments and
other instructional resources. These tools will be tested initially in
introductory CS curricula, as well as in workshops for visiting high school
students. Students will document their research and present as papers
or posters, whenever possible.
TWiCE-Community is a free resource to local non-profits and
community-based organizations. All expenses associated with
providing this service are covered by grants and generous sponsors.
TWiCE-Community represents a valuable (and unique) resource of
technically trained and enthusiastic young women.
Members offer free Information Technology (IT) support as
identified/needed by the individual organizations. The services
provided by the students include assistance with:
 |
Selection of personal
computer equipment, servers, networks, etc.
