NEWPATH program for BS-CSE students
Summary: BS-CSE students who are in the NEWPATH program will complete each of the following:- The standard BS-CSE curriculum under the individualized technical electives option;
- The Entrepreneurship Minor offered by the Fisher College of Business (see the "E-Minor" link in the table above), with 12 credit hours counting as the individualized tech elective option's "appropriate courses from one or more other disciplines";
- Six month, half-time internship spread over two summer quarters or a three month full-time internship during one summer; the internship(s) will be with an IT startup or other suitable IT company in the Central Ohio area and will be coordinated by TechColumbus;
- The e-practicum (see link in the table above).
Benefits of joining the NEWPATH program: NEWPATH is undoubtedly a demanding program, as will be clear by comparing the bingo sheets below. Nevertheless, BS-CSE students with an interest in IT entrepreneurship should seriously consider joining the program since it will not only help them develop essential entrepreneurship skills, it will also give them experience, via the internships, in working for IT startups; and will give them actual experience, via the year-long e-practicum, in planning, trying to acquire funding, and setting up and running their own ventures. Throughout the period that the student is in the NEWPATH program, he or she will have designated faculty advisors from both the CSE Dept. and the Fisher College of Business assigned; in addition, the student will also be assigned to an experienced member of the industry who will serve as a mentor. Plus, subject to making satisfactory progress, NEWPATH students will be eligible for special scholarships.
Joining NEWPATH: Students will typically join the NEWPATH program near the end of their freshman year or early in the sophomore year. It is, however, possible for highly motivated students to join and succeed in the program as late as in their junior year. If you are in your late sophomore year or even junior year and are interested in a program that will develop your entrepreneurial abilities talk to one of the NEWPATH faculty listed and we will work with you to develop a program tailored to your individual situation. In any case, if you are a BS-CSE major or pre-major and have an interest in IT entrepreneurship, you are urged to join NEWPATH as early as possible in your program. Attend the information session on January 15. See the "Info Session" link for details.
NEWPATH/BS-CSE Schedule: The following table shows a possible 4-year schedule for completing the NEWPATH/BS-CSE requirements. Some students may prefer to stretch the schedule out over one or two additional quarters or, possibly, take a few of the courses (especially GEC courses) during summer quarters. The schedule assumes that students have AP credit for Math 151. For students who do not have such credit, the schedule will have to be appropriately adjusted. The schedule also assumes that students will take Bus Fin 590, Bus Mktg & Log. 490, Bus MHR 590 as their electives for the entrepreneurship minor; for full details of the entrepreneurship minor, please see the e-minor page.
See also the item, in the "news" page, about the planned individualized study (course number: 693) that students will be required to take in the fall quarter of their sophomore, junior, and senior years.

| *Capstone Design Course: | |
|
For the capstone design course requirement, students must
choose one of CSE 682, 731, 758, 762, 772, 778. The focus of each of
these courses is a design/ development/ implementation project. The areas
of the courses are computer animation, knowledge-based systems,
software engineering, web-services based distributed systems,
information systems, and VLSI respectively.
The schedule above assumes the capstone design course will be taken in Spring of the third year. CSE 731, 758 and 762 are all offered in Sp. Students planning to take one of these courses must plan on taking the appropriate prerequisite courses during the Au/Wi of the third year. Students who wish to take one of the other capstones will have to make appropriate adjustments: To take CSE 682 (Winter), take 581 in Autumn of 3rd year, 541 also in Au of 3rd year (bumping 660 or 670 to later in the year) and 682 in Winter; to take CSE 772 (Winter), take 616 or 757 in Au of 3rd year and 772 in Wi. CSE 778 is offered only in Au. Students who want to take this course may have to take it in the Au of the 4th year. | |
