Minor in Computer Science

This program was recently revised to make it more flexible. If you were already following the earlier program, that should still meet the requirements of this more flexible program. If you have any questions, please consult with one of the advisors in the Advising Office.

Students who plan to major in another area but have a strong interest in computing may want to consider doing a Minor in Computer and Information Science (CIS).

A student minoring in CIS must follow one of the following two tracks. Courses applied to the minor may not be applied toward the student's major.

Programming and Algorithms Track:

    Required Courses
CSE 201 or 202; 221; 222; 321;
Math 345 or 366.

    Elective Courses (select a minimum of two)
The following courses are recommended: CSE 360, 541, 551, 560, 581, 621, 625, 630, 651, 670, 671, 675.01 or 675.02, 677, 680.
You may choose other courses with approval of the Advising Office.

Information Systems Track:

    Required Courses
CSE 200, 201, 214, 670;
Math 345 or 366.

    Elective Courses (select a minimum of two)
The following courses are recommended: CSE 314, 551, 616, 671.
You may choose other courses with approval of the Advising Office.

Students pursuing a minor do not get permanent computer accounts on the departmental machines, nor do they get priority scheduling in CSE courses.

The following guidelines apply to all minor programs, including the CIS minor program, in the College of Arts and Sciences. If you have any questions about these guidelines, please contact ASC (see useful links page for contact information).

If you have questions about doing a minor in CIS, please contact the Advising Office.
