The Advising Office is staffed by professional advisors who can help students in a variety of ways. They can assist students who request to do academic planning, understand graduation requirements, file financial aid and college petitions, and refer them to other OSU offices as appropriate. The Advising Office is also the place to go to for information about and signing up for placement tests (for pre-majors), for information about when courses might be offered, as well as for college and departmental forms. The staff supports the mission of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) where "advising is teaching" and the interactions are based on student development and engagement.
The Advising Office is responsible for assigning, at the appropriate time, faculty advisors to individual students, based on the student's interests and technical elective option. If a student feels that the faculty advisor currently assigned to him or her is not working out well possibly because of mismatched technical interests, the student can request the Advising Office for a change of advisor. In other words, if you are a major (or pre-major) in the department, and you have a problem or question, the Advising Office is probably a good place to go to for help!
Occasionally, a pre-major (or even a major) may discover that computing is not a good match, or a pre-major's GPA does not meet the current requirement for admission to the major. The Advising Office can help in such cases as well by providing referrals to other appropriate departments and recommend possible alternative major programs.
