The Ohio State University Computer and Information Science Department Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence Research (LAIR) team is currently pursuing several avenues of investigation into machine learning, neurocomputation, advanced decision architectures and perception. A highly multidisciplinary approach is being taken in regards to moving forward in these most engaging endeavors. Artificial intelligence (AI) research studies intelligence and cognition by emulating human and other forms of intelligence, and by making artifacts that display intelligent behavior. We adopt the strategy of focusing on complex real-world tasks such as: visual and speech perception, sentence understanding, medical diagnosis, collaborative knowledge environments and engineering design. This strategy is motivated by a pragmatic desire to have an impact by building successful artifacts, and also by a strong belief that basic research in understanding intelligence can best be done in the context of concrete, complex problems.
