Merlion

This giant Merlion statue standing in the Sentosa Island is the symbol of Singapore.

Singapore is a small tropical island, only 633 square kilometers in area. It is about one degree North of the Equator and 103 degrees East Meridian.

Singapore became independent on August 9, 1965. Before then, as part of Malaysia, this island was a British colony. The country's economy has rapidly grown, and Singapore has become one of 4 richest countries and regions in Asia.


National Museum

This museum houses and exhibits historical records and collections before and after Singapore was independent. It also has exhibitions on specific themes of diverse cultures.


Fine Arts Museum

This museum exhibits collections of Asian and Western art works which are both classical and modern. It is as elegant as the National Art Gallery in Washington D.C. in US although it is much smaller.


City Hall

This is the location of the government. The Supreme court is adjacent to it.

Lee Kuan Yew was the Prime Minister from 1965 to 1990, and now Senior Minister. SM Lee, a native Chinese, graduated from the Law School of Cambridge in the United Kingdom in 1940s. He came back to Singapore in 1950.

Due to many historical and political reasons, the official language in Singapore is English. However, Chinese mandarin has been the most popular language in the country. SM Lee once said, "To have no emotionally acceptable language as our mother tongue is to be emotionally crippled. We shall doubt ourselves. We shall be less self-confident. Mandarin is emotionally acceptable as our mother tongue ... It reminds us that we are part of an ancient civilization with an unbroken history of over 5,000 year".


City Skyline

Singapore is a highly industrialized city. Many business towers have appeared among the tropical plants surrounded by warm seas.


Diverse Asian Cultures

The 3 million population of Singapore consists of 78% Chinese, 14% Malay and 7% Indian. This mixture impacts Singapore's culture from different directions: China to the East, India to the West, and Malay around it. This Asian Village maintains many unique architectures of different countries in Asia.

There is a unique street called ``Little Indian" where many Indian Immigrants settled after coming to Singapore.

A View of the South China Sea

Sentosa is a beautiful island in the south of Singapore, and is connected to the mainland by a sky cable. This is also the most southern point in the Asia continent. The vast South China Sea holds this small pearl.
