Welcome to Europa! This document will help you set up your Europa web page(s) and associated file(s) and explain how the Europa file system is set up.

Here is a diagram of the Europa file system to give you an overview.

These files belong to the “europa” group. You have been added to this group, so you have access to all files within this structure.

Temporary Student Files
This houses directories and files for Europa student members who need the space to store their in-progress work. Typically, students are able to keep their in-progress work in their personal CIS directories without exceeding their quota. This temporary Europa space is designated for students who run close to their quota, or for groups working on a project together needing a centralized storage space.

If you need space in this directory, touch base with one of the Europa faculty members.

Note: These are termed “temporary” files because directories and files WILL BE DELETED after you graduate or leave Europa, or are inactive without touching base with one of the Europa faculty for more than a quarter. Be sure to save a copy of any files you wish to keep upon leaving, or talk with a faculty member about adding your work to the archive (see Archive below)

Archive

This directory is controlled by the Europa faculty, though you have read-only access as a europa group member. The archive contains projects by students that are either a “finished product” (though these could always be built upon as well) or a well documented work-in-progress that is substantial enough to be passed on to future Europans to continue where they left off.

The projects in the archive must be well documented and able to stand on their own without need for further explanations, etc. For instance, if you submit a project to the archive and a student joins Europa after you graduate, he/she should be able to open your project directory and fully understand what work was done and what ideas were behind your work. If you think you have a project ready for the archive, check in with one of the Europa faculty and they’ll take a look at it with you.

WWW

This houses all files that are displayed on the Europa web page (www.cis.ohio-state.edu/europa). There are pages for each Europa member (“people”) and project (“projects”).

(WWW) people

This houses a directory for each member’s Europa web page. You’ll be creating your own directory in here. (details) This is NOT meant to house project work! Only files that are to be displayed on your personal Europa page belong here. Most members have only an index/home page.

(WWW) projects

This houses a directory for each project, even if it is still in the “idea” stage. The projects are numbered and there is a text file that contains a list of these in this directory. You’ll need to add a project directory for each new project you start. (details) If you’re working as a team, or continuing on a previous project, you don’t need to create more than one directory for each project. It’s a good idea to check the projects page (www.cis.ohio-state.edu/europa/projects) or the text file to see if anyone has worked on a project similar to your idea. That way you could build upon their work (or join them if they are still active) instead of starting from scratch.

Again, as with the WWW/people directories, this is NOT the place for project work – only web files. Most projects only have an index/home page, though some have additional pages with details about their work, etc.

It’s usually a good idea to update your project pages throughout each quarter that you’re working on them. It’s a great place to track ideas, meetings, and project development. When a project is completed, or if you decide to forgo it for a different idea, make sure to update the page to reflect this and let the Europa Webmaster know to update the general project page

** Your member page and your project page(s) MUST be updated at least quarterly when you are enrolled for 693 credit.
