Ted Pavlic

A senior Electrical Engineering student (Electrical specialization) and Computer Science minor. A great deal of his time is spent assisting students in the Freshman Engineering Honors program. During the winter quarter, an even larger amount of time is devoted to OSU FIRST , OSU's FIRST robotics team which provides a valuable experience to local Columbus high schoolers. Ted puts time into researching not only for Europa , but for the ElectroScience Laboratory and for Professor Garbacz , an electromagnetics professor at OSU. Ted's work experience goes back a decade with a great deal of focus on Internet service and telecommunications. Recent job opportunities at IBM and National Instruments have had more of a focus on low-level network communication (IBM) and analog hardware design (NI).

Ted also is the Director of Computers for Engineer's Council and is a member of a number of other engineering groups around campus. Ted also tries to be involved in a number of free thought and libertarian-oriented groups, but often is not able to be very strongly connected to these.

Ted also has a great interest in saving the world and hopes others will consider reading some Daniel Quinn novels like:

  • Ishmael
  • The Story of B
  • My Ishmael: A Sequel
  • Beyond Civilization
  • many others, but those four are a good start (the first three in particular)

Research Interests:

I am currently seeking a degree in Electrical Engineering with emphasis on electromagnetics and VLSI. Along with my EE studies, I have decided to pursue a minor in Computer Science. Before I came to OSU, I had worked in the computer industry for nearly ten years, and even though I have chosen a degree path which takes me away from computers, I still care about issues involving the proliferation of computers and how society will cope with the uses and misuses of computer science. While someday I would like to work developing new wireless and broadband applications for high speed communication, I can easily see myself moving into a college teaching position surrounding either EE or CS. If I do find myself heading towards academia, EE research and development is very appealing to me and will most likely be my goal.

While I was originally planning on joining the EE combined BS/MS program, I now plan on moving toward the more traditional BS and then MS track. I am more concerned with depth of research than speeding up the time it takes for me to obtain my MS. While I may move into industry after I have my EE MS degree, I most likely will immediately start purusing my EE PhD.

My primary EE focus is electromagnetics, but circuit theory and design take a very strong secondary.

Along with school, I often find myself involved in the nearest robotics project or helping to teach Freshman Engineering Honors courses.

In Europa I'm very interested in helping to reform the way modern young computer scientists view computing and the world to help make cleaner, more thoughtful, and less arrogant computer programmers. I stress discipline and humility and feel that excellence only comes with much study, experience, and a great deal of humility. I feel that software engineering courses need to be careful about too shallow as it breeds bad habits.
