I am a linguistics major and a CIS major or minor depending on which way
the wind is blowing. My computer interests include natural language processing,
speech processing and production, UNIX-like operating systems (particularly
Linux and OpenBSD), Perl (a programming language developed by a
linguist!), and system administration (what I used to do before I came back
to school).
I'm also interested in phonology and historical linguistics, particularly
the hypothesized Altaic "super-family" (I am skeptical...) and the
question of how/whether Japanese and Korean fit into the picture. Also,
if you know any speakers of Evenki, Oroch, Sibe, or any of the other
Tungusic languages (spoken in Siberia and northern China) please put
them in touch with me!
Hmmm, while I'm at it, if you know anybody from China's Hunan province,
please please please have them contact me!!! I am doing
some independent research on the Hunan "dialect" (really its own language)
next quarter and I'm always looking for more language informants.

Research Interests:
My research interests in Europa include testing the portability of
the RESOLVE discipline to languages other than C++ and using the
component-based approach to developing system administration tools.
I would also like to evaluate the specification language linguistically.
Some computational linguistics tools would also be interesting, but
I'm just getting started in Europa and I don't want to get too far
ahead of myself!

Suite Development
I've been working with Geoff Hing on developing some tools in
Perl for helping the Europa
web site maintainers update the pages on the site with a minimum
of fuss. We've decided to see how hard we can make this otherwise
fairly simple task by trying to follow the software component
engineering approach exemplified by the RESOLVE discipline, only
in Perl, which is sort of the antithesis of RESOLVE/C++.
Completed Projects:
None, yet! Autumn 2000 was my first quarter with Europa. Give
me some time!
