Steve Conley

I am a linguistics major and a CIS major or minor depending on which way the wind is blowing. My computer interests include natural language processing, speech processing and production, UNIX-like operating systems (particularly Linux and OpenBSD), Perl (a programming language developed by a linguist!), and system administration (what I used to do before I came back to school).

I'm also interested in phonology and historical linguistics, particularly the hypothesized Altaic "super-family" (I am skeptical...) and the question of how/whether Japanese and Korean fit into the picture. Also, if you know any speakers of Evenki, Oroch, Sibe, or any of the other Tungusic languages (spoken in Siberia and northern China) please put them in touch with me!

Hmmm, while I'm at it, if you know anybody from China's Hunan province, please please please have them contact me!!! I am doing some independent research on the Hunan "dialect" (really its own language) next quarter and I'm always looking for more language informants.
