The Diversity Program of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering seeks to develop and educate a diverse and highly-regarded community of computer scientists through a supportive infrastructure for women and underrepresented minorities.

Friendly Groups

ACM-W is the student chapter of the international Association for Computing Machinery Committee on Women, whose mission is to engage in activities and projects that aim to improve the working and learning environments for women in computing. This includes promoting activities that result in more equal representation of women in CS such as mentoring or role modeling, monitoring the status of women in industrial and academic computing through the gathering of statistics, providing historical information about women's accomplishments and roles in CS, and serving as a repository of information about programs, documents and policies of concern to women in CS.

The OSU Chapter of ACM-W was chartered on May 13, 2003. Our membership is open to all students interested in furthering this mission, male or female, grad or undergrad, etc.  ACM-W events include hosting speakers, killing computers, bowling, watching old computer movies and eating good food.

Celebrations and Regular Events

Through private and public sponsors, the CSE is pleased to provide funding for selected women and underrepresented minorities to attend these and other professional conferences.  

The Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing is an international,  biannual conference designed to bring the research and career interests of women in computing to the forefront. Presenters are leaders in their respective fields, representing industrial, academic and government communities. Leading researchers present their current work, while special sessions focus on the role of women in today’s technology fields.  Nearly 1000 women students, faculty and members of industry from around the world attend this conference.

OCWIC is a small regional conference modeled after the international Grace Hopper Celebration of women in computing. More than a hundred attendees from all over the state, ranged from freshmen to grad students, from faculty to women working in IT jobs in industry.  There are parallel career panels focusing on either industry or academic careers. Undergraduate students have the opportunity to showcase their research with a poster session. Technical paper presentations are made by faculty and graduate students alike. The diversity of the topics illustrated the breadth and scope of opportunities in computing.

The ACM Special Interest Group on Computer Science Education (SIGCSE) provides a forum for problems common among educators working to develop, implement and/or evaluate computing programs, curricula, and courses, as well as syllabi, laboratories, and other elements of teaching and pedagogy. An annual symposium provides a diverse selection of technical sessions and opportunities for learning and interaction.  This symposium addresses problems common among educators working to develop, implement and/or evaluate computing programs, curricula, and courses. In addition, the symposium provides a forum for sharing new ideas for syllabi, laboratories, and other elements of teaching and pedagogy, at all levels of instruction.

Helpful People - Tutors and Mentors

Tutoring can be a helpful supplement to time spent in class, studying on one's own, and meeting with the instructor and graders. Mentoring provides "real world" information, encouragement, advice, and access to networks (especially those often unavailable to women in male dominated fields).  Learn more about what's available by clicking here.

• CSE Teaching Assistant/Grader - Graders assist faculty and instructors in grading labs and homeworks for many CSE courses. Both undergraduate and graduate students are hired as graders in CSE.
