Menon Named Distinguished Alumni
CSE is proud to announce that the College of Engineering
has designated Dr. Jai Menon as
a Distinguished Alumni for 2004.
The Distinguished Alumnus Awards were established
by the faculty of the College of Engineering to recognize distinguished
achievement on the part of alumni in the field of engineering
or architecture by reason of significant inventions, important
research or design, administrative leadership, or genius in
production. Nominations are judged by the College Committee
on Honorary Degrees and Honors on behalf of the College faculty.
Dr Jai Menon earned both MS and PhD degrees in
computer science from The Ohio State University in 1978 and
1981, respectively. Dr. Jai Menon is IBM Research's leading
authority on the design and architecture of data storage systems,
which enable enterprises and organizations to manage their data
reliability and efficiently.
In 1982, Menon joined IBM Research in San Jose, California,
where he became a pioneering researcher and designer of data
storage systems and RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks)
architectures. He was named functional manager, CS Storage Systems,
in April 2000. In May 2001, Jai was named IBM Fellow, the company's
most prestigious and highest technical honor.
Dr. Menon is also Co-Director of the Storage
Systems Institute, a virtual organization/joint program between
IBM Research and the Storage Systems Group aimed at speeding
the incorporation of scientific and technological advances into
IBM storage systems products.
Jai is an IEEE Fellow and member of the IBM Academy of Technology,
Menon has received numerous IBM technical awards, published
31 refereed papers and 46 technical reports and is contributing
author to three books on database and storage systems. He holds
over 45 U.S. Patents and has 20 additional patent applications
on file with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He received
the 2002 W. Wallace McDowell Award from the IEEE for "Leading
Contributions to the Architecture and Design of Data Storage
Systems and RAID Technology."
