Faculty Guidelines for Utilization of Graders
Grader support is a budgeted resource provided to regular CSE faculty (and other teachers of CSE courses, where appropriate) for courses other than research specialty courses and seminars. The average number of hours per week for each course is generally determined by the Graduate/Undergraduate Assignments Committee Chair person on consultation with the Curriculum Committee Chairperson, the Department Chairperson, and the faculty who teach the various courses. Feedback from the Graders is also factored in, where appropriate.
Since this support is NOT an UNLIMITED RESOURCE, faculty are expected to tailor the lab assistant workload for each course to make it commensurate with the average number of assigned hours per week for that course. Therefore, when you are assigned an assistant for your course(s), please check the number of assigned hours for the course(s) and tailor the workload accordingly. Any faculty member who excessively increases the workload is being GROSSLY UNFAIR to the ASSISTANT, not only because he/she is not being remunerated for any extra hours put in for the work, but also because the assistant is often put in the compromising position of having to do poor quality work or to complain to the Assignments Committee about having to do much more work than he/she is being compensated for.
Finally, a reminder is in order that among the appropriate responsibilities for lab assistants are: evaluating of lab reports, grading of homework papers and of other types of project reports. Under no circumstances should lab assistants be asked to grade examinations. This is a responsibility of the instructor of the course, any exceptions to which must be cleared with the Department Chairperson.
Your adherence to all of the above guidelines is requested. In this regard, you are also asked to familiarize yourself with the contents of the Guidelines for CSE Graders and the CSE Grader Code-of-Conduct Agreement to make sure that you and your assistants(s) are adhering to all of the guidelines.
