Getting Started With Lab 1
Welcome to CSE 201. Lab 1 has been designed to introduce you to the
CSE Windows computing environment, and to the process of writing, compiling,
running, and submitting your labs. This document is not Lab 1.
To access the lab assignment you need to
log into one of the CSE environment PCs. Here are the instructions on how to
do that and where to find the complete Lab 1 assignment. If you have any
questions or run into any trouble, please let your instructor know.
First Step: Logging In
First, you need to login to Windows on a lab PC.
To login:
- Momentarily press and hold the <control>, <alt>, and
<delete> keys simultaneously. This will cause Windows to prompt you
for your account information.
- Click inside the User name box and type the username that was
provided to you by your instructor (usually your last name).
- Click inside the Password box and type your password. Your
default password is the last four digits of your SSN followed by your first
and last initials, followed by an exclamation point ('!') (e.g., Jane Smith's
password would be something like 6789js!).
Note: your default password is all lower-case!
- Then press Enter on the keyboard (or click on the arrow next to the
password) to complete the process of login to Windows.
The first thing that you will be asked to do after logging in for the
first time is to change your currently insecure Windows password. The following
message will appear:
Click on the OK button, and the Change Password dialog window
will be displayed:
To change your password:
- You should choose a password that you can remember and that no one
else will associate with you or your account. A good rule of thumb is to
make it six to eight characters in length, and to include one or more
numbers or punctuation characters.
- Do the obvious in the dialog box, then press Enter on the keyboard
(or click on the arrow next to the password).
After your Windows desktop appears, you may use any Windows
application, including one of the available web browsers (Firefox and
Internet Explorer).
Looking Ahead: Logging Out
Before we proceed to explore, here are some instructions on how to logout
of the environment when you are done with your session. You do not need to
follow these steps right now (unless you are done for now).
To logout of Windows on the lab PC click on the "Start" button
in the lower-left corner of the screen and select "Log Off" from the
menu that appears when you click on the little triangle on the right of
the lock button.
Where to go from here
The complete Lab 1 (just like all homeworks and lab assignments for the class)
is available online from the CSE 201 web site at
http://www.cse.ohio-state.edu/cse201. Log in to the CSE environment as described above, fire up one
of the browsers, and go to "http://www.cse.ohio-state.edu/cse201"; find the
"Lab Assignments" link and click on it. Finally click on the "Lab 1
Instructions" link. Now you can work on Lab 1.
