THE FIRST YEAR
We continued to try to do some new things and we tried some old things done differently.
Computer Anatomy 101
Our ACM-W student chapter hosted a workshop for this year's Take a Daughter to Work Day, entitled Computer Anatomy. Basically we offered girls (and a couple boys) the opportunity to get under the skin of a PC and see how it all works.
Pictures and commentary are posted online. There's also a link at the bottom to some unedited video footage of the workshop in action. In the first couple minutes you can see me explaining how to use a screwdriver and then helping a couple girls remove the motherboard from their PC.This event was also covered in ACM's online MemberNet magazine.
Online Store
When our chapter had a t-shirt making night, everyone really enjoyed putting iron-on logos on their shirts. Sadly, the logo on my t-shirt shredded the first time I ran it through the wash. Since then, we've been talking about how to get better quality clothing made.
Then I learned about CafeShops and set up our own online store. This was ridiculously easy to do, and it might even generate a little income for our chapter.
So students can wear their ACMW membership proudly on cool new t-shirts and other merchandise. (compared to the iron-ons, these are more or less guaranteed not to shred in your washing machine). There are lots of other types of merchandise available, including camisoles, aprons, stuffed animals, sweats and more.
Once you've set up your online store you can also purchase large lots (>15) at greatly discounted prices. This might be a good way to reward members for their work or to incite new members to your group.
And if you never make the minimum $25 necessary for CafeShops to cut a check, it's still a nice little public relations effort. I wear my ACMW t-shirt and hoodie to teach my classes.
THE FIRST THREE MONTHS
We spent the bulk of our first quarter just getting organized. We had to figure out how to do meetings, how to get money, how to communicate with each other, how to recruit new members and how to get along with other student organizations. [read more...]
THE FIRST SIX MONTHS
Once our fundamental processes were in place, we felt comfortable inviting other students to be a part of our club. [read more...]
